How many times haveyou thought you should go and see a lawyer, but you didn’t because you figured it would be too expensive? Maybe you had a contract you wanted to review, or you wanted to be smart about protecting your rights with an employer or a business partner. Or maybe you just wanted to find out about a certain regulation but didn’t know where to start looking?
All those things may get much, much easier. The RegTech revolution could be the catalyst for the biggest transformation in modern legal history. Tools like chatbots, natural language processing and artificial intelligence are creating new, faster, and cheaper ways for anyone to access legal services. Laws and regulations are not like nuclear physics or biology – where humans are trying to understand the miracles of nature – but are rather pure human creations drafted by human legislators. Regulations are often simple rules (e.g. if you do A, then consequence is B) which can be easily written in code and made accessible to the broader public in easier to understand formats. This will democratize legal services not only by bringing costs down but by also providing access and legal awareness to the general public, clarifying things like tenancy rights, employment laws, child custody obligations.
There will be some negative consequences, however. The demand for human lawyers, especially those involved in the more repetitive lower end work, will likely drop, eliminating some of the jobs we see today. But the demand for high end lawyers involved in the more creative and specialized fields or those focused on the new fields of law, from smart contracts to legal coding will increase.
Are you ready to witness the democratization of legal services? Some way or another, it’s likely to touch us all.
