Published: 18 September 2019 Author: Bhagvan Kommadi The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the areas of predicting legal and judiciary decisions based on criteria such as penal codes, state laws and legal precedent is rapidly evolving. Predictions that legal case management software will be using AI techniques for case-based reasoning are increasingly prominent. AI Deep Learning Platforms used in legal practices will have capabilities to carry out client management and updates as well as legal service alerts management. Platforms will allow lawyers to monitor the progress of matters, resource commitments, and budget status in real time on a case-by-case basis. For lawyers, it may provide a gateway to access firm’s prior workflows. Whilst for clients, the knowledge management system enables direct access to primary information, cutting out the need for active participation by lawyers. The process of extracting data from legal documents and populating due diligence summary templates is anticipated to be performed using AI. Critical information will be extracted from contracts based on user specifications such as term, renewal, pricing and assignment. This will allow attorneys to focus on the most relevant sections of the contract being reviewed. Furthermore, the selection of the co-counsel can also be completed by this system, as criteria such as case types, previous wins and losses can be assigned to individuals. AI can help legal firms and governments handle their compliance monitoring by creating a natural language processing system which reads through the legalities of regulations. The information assembled is then restructured into computational language. Nevertheless, such new AI application introduces various business, security and privacy issues. These will have to be addressed by government regulation. It will be important to ensure that applications are developed in a way that provides the desired benefit for all parties involved in legal processes. Regulation, compliance and integrity are needed in order for customers to be able to trust advice and services provided by such systems.
