The business idea that I had been developing in my head and discussing with my future business partners now had to become a reality. Unlike the way in which business ideas emerge in the movies, I didn’t have a ‘eureka moment’. Scalable Capital emerged in my head over time as I was asked time and again by friends and family a question that I couldn’t answer. The question was simple: “what should I do with my money? ”We felt that there was a gap in the market for everyday people who wanted an investment solution that was accessible, low cost and good – so we decided to get a group of likeminded and highly skilled people together and build it. Central to Scalable Capital is technology. I had spent two years as a trader seeing technology transform my job, increasing the capabilities and efficiency of my trading desk while reducing reliance on humans. The technology that facilitated that change was becoming readily available at low cost and we firmly believed that by using it, we could bring an institutional quality product to a retail investor. We believed we could develop a product that was new, different and crucially, better than what was already out there. A year after our UK launch I am happy to say that I think we have achieved that. We already manage more than £100m in assets and operate in three countries. The investment performance of our client portfolios has been good and our unique model helped investors to navigate a wildly unpredictable 2016 in good shape. I look to the future with determination, optimism and confidence
