Modern economies are characterised by an outstanding level of technological progress and wealth. While in the early period of human history, the pace of technological progress was relatively slow, key factors for competitiveness have become the capability of reacting quickly and predicting the success of new and modern technologies.

Trend Watching’s Trends and Insight Leader David Mattin expects that in the near future, Artificial Intelligence (AI) will fill our closet, select our pets, and offer us friendships. In fact, a look into the landscape of technological trends 2018 reveals that innovation is mainly driven by data, cloud, intelligence and algorithm. AI is thereby rapidly moving from theory to reality. Defined as the simulation of human intelligence processes, AI is undoubtfully shaping the direction of technological progress.

AI-driven trends will transform products, engage customers, optimise operations and empower employees. However, just a few years ago cloud computing was praised as the digitisation tool par excellence and as the next big thing. With AI benefitting from an increasing amount of attention across the globe, one might think that cloud computing is being pushed aside by AI.

The truth is that most new technologies and especially AI are distinguished by extraordinary data processing skills. Servers which are part of cloud technology hold the data which an AI needs to access. As the AI learns, it can impart this new data back to the cloud, which can thus help other AI technologies learn as well.

In consequence, AI-driven trends for the future will favour the omnipresence of cloud computing giving it the role of a digital epicentre for new technologies. The digitization tool as the cloud has been praised throughout the years, will obtain a more important and crucial role thanks to the rise of AI-driven trends.
